DescriptionHupacasath First Nation is a Nuu-chah-nulth Nation located in the Alberni Valley near the City of Port Alberni. Its traditional territory includes lands and waters surrounding the Alberni Valley, Sproat Lake, Great Central Lake and important river, forest and mountain ecosystems on central Vancouver Island. The Nation’s strategic location near an established urban service centre, transportation routes, forestry operations and tourism destinations provides a strong foundation for economic development. Hupacasath is a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council and continues to advance its economic and governance interests through agreements, partnerships and community-owned initiatives. Hupacasath First Nation has developed economic interests in forestry, tourism, clean energy, natural-resource management, construction, commercial property and environmental services. The Nation has secured forest tenures and woodland opportunities around Great Central Lake and Sproat Lake and has pursued recreational and sustainable-tourism development within its territory. Hupacasath has also explored innovative forest-bio economy opportunities, demonstrating an interest in producing higher-value products from forest resources rather than relying solely on conventional harvesting. Hupacasath First Nation is well positioned to participate in the continued economic development of the Alberni Valley and central Vancouver Island. Opportunities exist in forestry innovation, renewable energy, tourism, accommodation, commercial development, environmental restoration, infrastructure, transportation and Indigenous procurement. Its proximity to Port Alberni provides access to labour, education, port facilities, regional markets and public services. Businesses and governments seeking partnerships with Hupacasath will find a Nation with demonstrated economic experience and a strong commitment to responsible development, Indigenous ownership and the protection of culturally important lands and resources.
