The Nation comprises multiple reserve parcels including Alexis 133, Alexis Whitecourt 232, Alexis Elk River 233, and Alexis Cardinal River 234, and has a registered population of approximately 1,986 members with about 1,200 living on-reserve. Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation also participates in the Yellowhead Tribal Council and is a founding member of the Yellowhead Tribal College, which supports education as a foundation for community capacity and economic participation. Economically, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation is distinguished by its community-owned business enterprises and strategic investments that generate employment, revenue, and capacity building. A key economic pillar is Backwoods Energy Services, a major Indigenous-owned company in Western Canada providing services to the oil, gas, forestry, utilities, and environmental sectors; the Nation acquired 100 % ownership of this firm, positioning it as one of the largest Indigenous community-owned businesses and a primary employer for members. Alexis is also involved in construction and project management through local entities such as Hill Plain Construction Services, established following the successful completion of major infrastructure projects like new school construction, and renewable-energy initiatives, including solar installations on community buildings. Beyond individual businesses, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation is partnering regionally — including through the First Nation Capital Investment Partnership with other Treaty 6 Nations — to pursue participation in major infrastructure and economic assets that support long-term wealth creation. Looking ahead, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation is steering its economy toward sustainable, diversified growth across energy services, construction, infrastructure development, land and resource partnerships, and capacity building for community members. With established enterprises and strategic alliances, the Nation is building intergenerational economic strength and opportunity.
